2018 is a new beginning. YIART has selected 14 must-see art exhibitions in 2018 for you.

 

1. Analia Saban: Canvas on Paint

Argentine artist Analia Saban is known for her use of various traditional media in experimental contexts, especially her unconventional interpretations of paintings, making connections between daily life and objects. Her work has been collected by many well-known organizations, such as the Hammer Museum of Art in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Fine Arts, Paris's Centre Pompidou, and the Fundacion Proa in Buenos Aires among others.

2. Leandro Erlich: Seeing and Believing

In 2001, Leandro Erlich's famous installation from the Venice Biennale "Swimming Pool" found a permanent home in Japan. Erlich is an Argentine conceptual artist; he has work in many important art spaces, including the permanent collection of MoMA. Leandro Erlich readjusts the "architecture" of his work according to the conditions of each space. Participants are encouraged to use their reflections in the mirror to create an interactive experience with Erlich's work. This is the Japanese debut of many of his works, including but not limited to his works "The Classroom" and "Changing Rooms".

3.Richard Long: Drawn From the Land

British Land artist Richard Long is arguably the first person to create a arts practice simply through "walking". His work "A Line Made by Walking" was created as he walked back and forth in an open green space, stepping on the grass and forming a straight line through his continued movements, documented by photographs, techniques that carry through to his future works. His conceptual work has been very inspiring, as a result Richard Long has been shortlisted for the British Turner Prize four times, winning the prize in 1989. This exhibition focuses on Richard's photographic works, though it includes sculptural works like "Cornish Slate Ellipse", so that the full scope of Long's work can be appreciated.

4. César Baldaccini

In order to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of French sculptor César, Centre Georges-Pompidou exhibited 130 of the sculptor's works. César turned pieces of scrap metal into art objects, subverting the stereotypes of metalworking. His work was well received, and Cesar continued creating avant-garde works throughout the rest of his life.

5. Alicja Kwade: ReReason

Yuz Museum presents “ReReason” by Alicja Kwade, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Asia. The exhibition features 24 works of art, including 5 monumental installations from the collection of Yuz Foundation. Alicja Kwade participated in “Viva Arte Viva”, the 57th Venice Biennale, Venice, 2017, “Le Precieux Pouvoir des Pierres”, MAMAC, Nice, France, 2016.

6. Katharina Grosse

| Australia, Sydney | Carriageworks | 2018. 01. 06 ~ 2018. 04 . 08

Carriageworks is a contemporary art center in Sydney, Australia. This year Carriageworks has invited German artist Katharina Grosse to create large installation art for their space. Grosse is internationally known for her colorful and large-scale installations, Grosse uses drapery to create the work for Carriageworks.

7. Birds of a Feather: Joseph Cornell's Homage to Juan Gris

American surrealist artist Joseph Cornell was inspired by Juan Gris's work, “The Man at the Café”, and he started creating a series of found-object assembly works in boxes. The Juan Gris series features a large white Cockatoo.

8. Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing

Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral is arguably one of founders of modern art in Latin America. Her featured works are warm and colorful, mellow depictions of South America. Tarsila do Amaral: Inventing is the first exhibition of her work in the United States, showcasing some of her most important works since the 1920s, featuring over 130 paintings, pictures, and sketches.

9. Japan in Architecture: Genealogies of Its Transformation

Japanese architecture today attracts attention from all over the world. Numerous architects, from Tange Kenzo to Taniguchi Yoshio, Ando Tadao, Kuma Kengo, Sejima Kazuyo and other young upcoming architects have received great international acclaim. This exhibition shows how Japanese architecture has changed from the past to the present, and it will feature pictures of these masters’ works.

10. 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale: Freespace

Architect Huang Sheng-Yuan and his team Fieldoffice will represent Taiwan at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, where they will present models and images from their “Living in Yilan: From Mountains to Water” project. Their famous works include Cherry Orchard Cemetery Service Center, Fairytale Park, and the Yilan Museum of Art, among other buildings.

11. Alberto Giacometti

|USA, New York | Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum | 2018. 06. 08 ~ 2018. 09 . 16

This year Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum will exhibit over 175 works by Alberto Giacometti, including sculptures, paintings, and drawings. This exhibition is the largest in America of the past 15 years. His work “L'homme qui marche I” was sold for £ 65 million at Sotheby's Spring Auction in 2010, breaking the record for the most expensive work of art at auction, previously held by Picasso.

12. Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2018

Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale which was founded by Fram Kitagawa, is one of the largest art festivals in the world and is held once every three years in the Echigo-Tsumari region since 2000. The festival was started encourage artists to participate in the community and revitalize the agricultural areas. Only later did it become an international outdoor arts festival. Echigo-Tsumari Art Field 2018 is planning to launch a new exhibition, "The Hojoki Shiki in 2018 ―Spatial designs of 10 square feet and their development". Participants can design a functional space that will connect with their own places, land and life.

13. ALL TOO HUMAN:BACON, FREUD AND A CENTURY OF PAINTING LIFE

|England, London | TATE | 2018. 10. 11 ~ 2019. 01. 27

ALL TOO HUMAN exhibits works form British artists who strove to represent human figures, and this exhibition will bring together almost 100 pieces by contemporary artists. The exhibition features Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. Three of Francis Bacon's most important works will be shown in the UK for the first time in three decades.

14. Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts

Bruce Nauman is famous for his sculptures and installations. Disappearing Acts is a comprehensive retrospective exhibition, featuring Nauman’s paintings, prints, photography, sculptures, and large installation art. Bruce Nauman won the Wolf Prize in 1993, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale in 1999, and was named one of the 100 most influential people by TIME Magazine in 2004.
