Late Summer

As the intensity of summer gradually fades, the sea breeze continues to drift along the shore, and sunlight still falls upon the beach and those who gather there. In many ways, summer has never truly ended. Memories of the ocean, light, and encounters remain suspended between the changing seasons. A Late Summer brings together five artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds, working across contemporary ink, acrylic and oil painting, and sculpture. Through depictions of beaches, figures, plants, and natural landscapes, the exhibition explores the subtle yet profound connections between humanity and nature, allowing the lingering essence of summer to continue into the early days of autumn.

Memories of summer often return at unexpected moments

This exhibition pays special tribute to Taiwanese artist Huang Chih-Chao (1941–2025), widely known as “Le Ko Ma.” He studied under the renowned artists Huang Chun-Pi and Li Chun-Shan, and in his youth was invited to pursue further studies in the United States, where he spent more than four decades. Together with Walasse Ting and Chen Chao-Hsiung, he was regarded as one of the “Three Musketeers of New York.”

Drawing on Western acrylic painting and abstract expressionist techniques, Huang combined them with a profound Eastern humanistic sensibility, earning him the reputation of the “Matisse of the East.” His paintings are characterized by vivid, exuberant colors and spontaneous, uninhibited brushwork. Horses, women, and landscapes frequently appear as recurring motifs, through which he expressed a powerful vitality and boundless creativity, moving freely between abstraction and figuration.

Ink artist Liao Wen-Hao, currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, continues to explore the relationship between ink painting and contemporary life. His works convey an unhurried and carefree rhythm, using natural landscapes and human figures to evoke inner landscapes that exist somewhere between reality and ideality. For this exhibition, he presents a new series set by the sea, placing figures between the shoreline and the tides. Within these quiet and leisurely scenes, moments of poetic resonance emerge between people and nature.

American artist Rebecca Bird creates paintings that are both quiet and charged with subtle tension. Using a refined realist vocabulary, she depicts intimate and familiar moments from everyday life, while placing them within broader historical and cultural contexts. Her work explores subjectivity and the nuanced, complex relationships between people, the self, and the natural world. Her latest works in this exhibition focus on the seaside. Beneath their calm surfaces, traces of emotional movement and the passage of time quietly unfold, inviting viewers to reconsider seemingly ordinary moments and discover the quiet power within them.

Brazilian ceramic artist Diego Rosendo draws inspiration from wild and mysterious exotic plants. His works carry the historical and emotional resonance of Brazil’s ceramic traditions, reflecting the local heritage of Pernambuco while incorporating thoughts on contemporary conditions and visions of the future. His sculptures appear as extensions of living nature, opening up an imaginative ecological world beyond the familiar landscape of the coast.

Wen-Shuang Hsieh, who holds a master’s degree from the Department of Fine Arts at the National Taiwan University of Arts, draws inspiration from reading, music, cinema, and her experiences of travel. She transforms everyday impressions and memories into images, observing the inner world and fragments of daily life from the perspective of an outsider. Delicate yet emotionally resonant, her paintings construct a personal narrative space somewhere between reality and imagination, bringing a gentle and deeply evocative presence to the exhibition.

Late Summer is more than an exhibition about the beach. It is a conversation about time, memory, and the changing states of life. As summer quietly slips away, the artists, working across different media, weave together the vastness of the ocean, the presence of the human figure, the rhythms of nature, and the emotions of the inner world into a series of evocative landscapes.

The light and warmth of summer do not truly disappear. Instead, they continue to flow through the works, inviting each viewer, at the turning of the seasons, to once again experience the freedom, stillness, and limitless possibilities carried by the sea breeze.
