RELAY 21-Ceramic First Relay

Andrea Maestri, Luciano Polverigiani, Chanakarn Semachai, Shoji Mochida and Godeleine de Rosamel Sep 5-Nov 30

Andrea Maestri
An Italian architect and designer. His work blurs the line between interior and furniture design with collections in limited edition. A boundless visionary talent and playful fantasy led him to create dreamlike spaces and objects, always with an exquisite touch of eccentricity and glamour; starting from a deep knowledge of past cultures, he celebrates a new way of living full of enchanted atmospheres and bizarre characters. The irreverence for conventional design and the unpredictable approach are the main features of his work, determined to create icons with seductive personality.

Andrea Maestri‘s production is characterized by the obsessive attention to details and the use of atypical materials and finishes, all mixed in a surprising way; Andrea is constantly exploring a wide range of production techniques, aiming to integrate advanced technologies and ancient manufacturing traditions. Andrea Maestri especially bring several wonderful works, including Alfonso, Renato, Ugo, Mingo, and other works for RELAY21-Ceramic.

His creations have been included in the most prestigious publications worldwide and exhibited at Triennale Milano, in Osaka and Los Angeles. Andrea Maestri lives and works in Milan.

Luciano Polverigiani
South American artist Luciano Polverigiani, who is a ceramist and has been working in this wonderful craft for thirty years. He likes to tell stories through clay characters that dialogue with each other, discuss, seek balance. There is an invitation to play that these characters propose through scenes with more than one possible reading depending on the location of the viewer, or pieces that can change position in a work to configure "another" work. The idea of "a ceramic toy" is what drives my current search. The tension that exists in a toy that breaks or in a sculpture to play with are concepts that my works explore.

Luciano Polverigiani was born in 1973, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He studied at the ceramics school Fernando Arranz, obtaining the title of a national teacher in 1993. He won the first prize of the National Art Foundation of Buenos Aires (Concurso Nacional de Artesanías) in 2019.Won the Silver Award in the first China "Yatai Lotus Mountain Prize" International Ceramic Competition in 2019.

Chanakarn Semachai
Chanakarn Semachai (Punch), was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. Chanakarn graduated in 2012 with her Bachelor in Fine and Applied Art Degree from Chulalongkorn University located in the heart of Bangkok City, the capital of Thailand. In 2019 she earned an MFA degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, USA. Punch is starting off as a sculptor, however began exploring functional wares that discuss similar ideas and designs as her sculptural surfaces. She combines a multitude of unique and exciting design elements on both her sculptures and functional vessels, creating a cohesive body of work. She has shown her work internationally, both in Thailand, Taiwan, and the United States. Her work was published in Ceramics Monthly’s 2018 September Issue. She was awarded a first place through the Jensen Art center's 6th Annual Cup Show. She won The Juror Choice’s Award through Companion Gallery. Punch was included on C File’s Holiday pop-up sale in 2017. At NCECA 2019, She won NCECA Graduate Award of Excellence 3rd place at NCECA Juried Student show. Recently, she curated “Hopefully Tomorrow” an exhibition focusing on BIPOC artists working with clay for Brockway Center of Art and Technology, PA. Chanakarn is a part of The Ceramics Congress Team and responds in organizing The Virtual Makers Market for The Ceramics Congress Conference. Currently, she has a career as a full-time ceramic faculty at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

In this RELAY21-Ceramic event, Punch has specially brought new works.

Shoji Mochida
A young artist from Japan. He draws inspiration from the Japanese subculture and popular culture. The theme of the production is to pick up and express the distorted universality in the game culture.

The overall sales volume of the Japanese ceramic market is almost the same as the sales volume of the social game "Dragon Ball Alone". In other words, today's ceramic art market has no customers.
At the Ceramic Art Laboratory of Tokyo University of the Arts where I studied, I mainly made tableware. But about? At the exhibition sponsored by the laboratory, the number of customers in recent years is refreshing.
In capitalism, he thought about insisting on ceramics and developed a world of tough guys like Dragon Ball.

In RELAY21 Ceramic, the artist brings a new series of works. Muscle is the answer to everything? In fighting games, role-playing games, and all games in between, players have been proving themselves by improving their status.

Born in Japan in 1993, Shoji Mochida graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Crafts, and now studies in the Department of Ceramics, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. Recently, he had his solo exhibition Shoji Mochida: Counterattack of Youth in Tokyo. He was granted Geidai Art Plaza 14th Awards last year.

Godeleine de Rosamel
Born in 1968, a French potter and illustrator, loves ceramic sculptures. She mostly does ceramic sculptures. They are imaginary animals adapted or evolved from reality, but nothing that really exists. She loves that work let her play at being the original creator of new life forms. It really fits with her interest in natural history, evolution, and the wonders of nature in general.

Godeleine has also always been drawn to what is called "low tech", and the fact that beautiful and meaningful art can be created out of very simple materials. With her work, she just wants to create an imagined but also familiar and coherent world that can take people's imagination to new places. Currently, she lives in Los Angeles with her husband.

*Since the works are overseas, it will take 2-3 weeks for delivery, please be patient
*Domestic shipping fee is extra.
