Norwegian artist Bjørn Lie

— Jan 7, 2026

Bjørn Lie is a Norwegian artist based in a small fishing village in Fife, Scotland.  He has worked as an illustrator for over 20 years, but personal work has always been central to his practice. Over the years he has developed a unique and personal visual language which is rich in detail and texture, yet also has a playful graphic quality.

His ongoing “Flamboyant Flowers” series is a vehicle for him to explore (and get lost in) different processes and forms of mark making. Although the finished pieces look highly polished, the process is all about taking risks and embracing the unpredictable in the quest for happy accidents.

Combining techniques like paper marbling, rubber stamps and pochoir stencilling Bjorn creates strange and otherworldly, beautiful and perhaps slightly seedy looking "botanical illustrations" that bring to mind Ernst Haeckel's lithographies of "natural curiosities" as well as the graphic rawness of Art Brut (aka "outsider art")

His creative practice spans multiple fields, ranging from diverse product design to picture books, and his work frequently appears in The New Yorker and The New York Times.
