Storm King Art Center is a world famous sculpture park located on the outskirts of New York. Located about 80 minutes by car from Manhattan, the park has more than 100 sculptures spread across an area of about 500 acres of rolling hills, scattered among trees and shade. Visitors of this park can feel the power of the green, endless outdoor nature, standing in valleys and hills among spectacular works of art. Storm King Art Center incorporates sculptures into the surrounding landscape, so visitors can both enjoy the artwork and enjoy the sunshine outdoors. If you're tired or don't wish to walk, you can rent a bike or enjoy the park's provided visitor tram. Every season brings a different and beautiful landscape of this park, and new sculptural work is always being added; the view and space here is ever changing.
Storm King Art Center was originally a contribution to the Hudson River School Painting (It was the Hudson River School of Art Museum until 1961, when the founders committed to transforming the land into a space for modern sculptures, early purchases were placed in a traditional garden outside of the museum). After the purchase of thirteen sculptures by artist David Smith in 1966, the museum began placing works in juxtaposition with the landscape, focusing on sculptural installation work. Since then, each piece is selected with careful consideration of the environment and scenery immediately surrounding. So far, the center has collected work by more than 70 well-known sculptors from around the world, including Alexander Calder, Mark Di Suevo, and Maya Lin, among others. Two recent exhibitions at Storm King include "David Smith: The White Sculptures", "Outlooks: Heather Hart". "David Smith: The White Sculptures" reviews the history of David Smith's recurring white sculpture work, and "Outlooks" present's Heather Hart's installation based on an American-style residential roof, providing an interactive space for storytelling and exploration that audiences can also walk on top of.
