Edward Yang 's Movies "That Day, on the Beach", "Taipei Story", " Yiyi: A One and a Two "

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Taiwanese director Edward Yang's death. Central Motion Picture Co. is releasing recently digitally restored versions of classics "That Day, on the Beach", "Taipei Story", and "Yiyi: A One and a Two", on 7/14, 7/21, and 7/28 respectively. Fans can revisit Edward Yang's movies and his explorations of society and observations of human nature.

"That Day, on the Beach" was Edward Yang's first long film. It focuses on a conversation between two women, discussing Taiwan's cultural climate in the 30's, covering topics of love, career, and family in the middle class. The film set a precedent in Taiwanese films with its superb performances and unresolved ending.

"Taipei Story" focused on a couple living in Taipei, whose differences pushed them apart, shattering their relationship. This film was in many ways a continuation of the cultural reflections of "That Day, on the Beach", a more pointed look at interpersonal alienation so present in modern society.

The last film is "Yiyi: A One and a Two", which won the 2000 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Director, and is often hailed as the masterpiece of Edward Yang's career. "Yiyi: A One and a Two" is directed from the point of view of an eight-year-old boy, whose keen observations of each of his family members, each in different stages of life, paints a portrait of depression and anxiety that is specific to the lives of people in Taipei.

"The Beguiled" is the latest work by Sofia Coppola, renowned director of "Lost in Translation. "The Beguiled" is a remake of Clint Eastwood's 1971 classic, starring Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst. The film won the 2017 Cannes Film Festival award for Best Director.

"The Beguiled" tells the story of the Civil War, following the arrival of a wounded enemy soldier at a girl's school in the South. While caring for the wounded man, opposition and jealousy cause a series of unexpected events. Meticulous and captivating imagery and superb acting performances make this film a must-see, so look forward to its release on 7/28.
