Chiharu Shiota was born in Osaka, Japan in 1972, and graduated from Kyoto Seika University, majoring in painting. She is known for her large installation art, using black or red braided lines in ample space to express the artistic conception and atmosphere intricately interwoven way. Black symbolizes the night sky and the universe, and red is the blood or red line of destiny. At the root of these works lie Shiota’s incessantly-pursued themes of life and death, her creative concept is to explore the fundamental question of life, "What is survival?" and choose some scenes or objects to create the idea of " the existence of absence ". Shiota's solo exhibitions are all over the world, and he represented Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale. Her works are collected in major international art museums, such as the Museum für Neue Kunst in Germany, and The National Modern Art Museum, Tokyo.
