Several huge gray military aircrafts are hanging in the sky, fighting fiercely with the Nazis, and the dark and despair cover over the earth. However, there are some cute doggies and ducks wandering by a lake, as if they know nothing about the fight above their heads.
With the strange visual experience, the audience seems to roam in a child’s imagination. In fact, these adorable paintings are from an 83 year-old British artist — Rose Wylie. This year, she has a solo exhibition: Quack Quack at London Serpentine Sackler Gallery. Quack Quack includes paintings dating from the late 1990s to the present day. The exhibition title connects similarly to place as well as to ‘ack-ack’, a term used to describe Second World War anti-aircraft artillery.
In the early years, Rose Wylie gave up her career for her family. Until 1980s, she studied at the Royal College of Arts, regaining her passion for creation. Then She was recognized by people 10 years later, and was called as " The oldest emerging artist. "
From movies, comic books, news to celebrity gossips, Wylie found ideas from her real life. She often paints through the filter of memory and impression, using text to enhance facts and recollections and editing images by overlaying new pieces of canvas over images, like a collage.
In “Queen with Pansies (Dots)”, viewers can see that the noble queen is surrounded by giant pansies. The composition and the brush stroke are like the way how children paint. All the controversial issues turned into joking graffiti, taking the conflict out of a humorous tone and making the world appear absurd but simple. Rose Wylie's creation always makes people feel childlike and vibrant.
